Sustainable Activewear Materials: Recycled Nylon, rPET and What Buyers Should Verify
Sustainability claims range from meaningful to meaningless. Here is what recycled nylon and rPET actually are, and how to verify a supplier's green claims.
Sustainability sells — but unsupported claims invite trouble. Understanding what the materials actually are lets you market responsibly and avoid greenwashing accusations.

The Main Options
| Material | Source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| rPET | Recycled plastic bottles | Widely available, cost-competitive |
| Recycled nylon (ECONYL-type) | Reclaimed fishing nets, carpet | Premium feel, higher cost |
| Organic cotton | Non-GMO farming | Rare in performance activewear |
| Bio-based spandex | Plant-derived | Emerging, limited supply |
What “Recycled” Actually Means in Fabric
A leggings fabric marketed as recycled typically contains recycled content in the main yarn only — the spandex portion is usually virgin. Ask for the exact percentage by weight, not a vague claim.
Certifications Worth Asking For
- GRS (Global Recycled Standard) — chain of custody for recycled content
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — no harmful substances
- bluesign — responsible chemical management
A supplier that can produce certificate numbers for the specific fabric batch is a supplier with a real supply chain. Vague logos on a website are not evidence.
Cost Reality
Recycled content typically adds 5–20% to fabric cost depending on type. Recycled nylon sits at the high end; rPET is closer to conventional polyester pricing. Factor this into your retail price before promising a sustainable line.
Marketing Responsibly
- State the recycled percentage, not just “recycled”
- Name the standard (GRS, OEKO-TEX)
- Avoid absolute claims like “100% eco-friendly”
- Keep certificate numbers on file
