Moisture-Wicking Technology in Activewear: What Buyers Should Actually Test
Every supplier claims moisture-wicking. Very few can prove it. Here is what the claim means, how it is achieved, and the tests that separate real performance from marketing.
“Moisture-wicking” is on nearly every activewear spec sheet — and it means almost nothing without evidence. Wicking is a measurable property, not a marketing word. Here is how to tell the difference.

What Wicking Actually Means
Wicking is the ability of a fabric to move liquid away from the skin and spread it across a larger surface area so it evaporates faster. Two properties matter:
- Capillary action — how fast liquid travels through the fabric
- Dry rate — how quickly the fabric releases that moisture
How Factories Achieve It
- Fiber choice: polyester wicks better than cotton by nature
- Knit structure: capillary channels built into the knit
- Finish: hydrophilic treatments applied during finishing
- Blends: spandex content affects stretch but not wicking much
Tests Worth Asking For
| Test | What it measures |
|---|---|
| Wicking height test | How far liquid climbs in a set time |
| Drying rate test | Time to dry after saturation |
| Vertical wicking | Upward capillary performance |
Ask for test reports, not claims. A factory that can produce a third-party report is a factory that actually understands the property.
Why It Fades
Hydrophilic finishes wash out over time. Fabric that wicks brilliantly at purchase can perform poorly after 30 washes. Ask how the wicking property is achieved — fiber and structure survive washing, topical finishes often do not.
The Practical Takeaway
- Ask for actual test data, not marketing copy
- Prefer structural wicking (fiber + knit) over topical finishes
- Test after multiple washes before making performance claims
- Be careful with claims — unsupported performance marketing invites complaints
