Custom Color Dyeing for Activewear: Pantone Matching and Dye Lot Control
Custom colors build brand identity — but dyeing introduces cost, minimums and lot variation. Here is how color matching actually works in activewear production.
Color is one of the most recognizable parts of a brand — and one of the easiest places to lose money. Here is how to specify and control custom colors.

Three Ways to Specify Color
| Method | Best for | Cost / effort |
|---|---|---|
| Stock color card | Fastest launch | Low — fabric already dyed |
| Custom dye to Pantone | Brand color identity | High — dye minimums apply |
| Lab dip approval | Exact match verification | Medium — adds 3–7 days |
What a Lab Dip Is
Before bulk dyeing, the mill produces a small lab dip — a swatch dyed to your target color. You approve it, then bulk runs to that standard. Never skip this step; it is the only way to catch a color problem before thousands of units are dyed.
Dye Lot Variation
Two batches of the same color can differ slightly. The risk grows with:
- Long gaps between production runs
- Different mills or dye houses
- Natural-fiber blends (less of an issue for synthetics)
- Light and saturated colors (both show more)
If color consistency across reorders is critical, reserve continuity dyed fabric in advance.
Minimums and Cost
- Custom dye typically requires a fabric minimum (often 300–1,000 m)
- Dyeing adds per-meter cost
- Each additional color is a separate minimum
Practical Color Strategy
- Launch with 2–3 stock colors to test demand
- Add custom colors only for proven winners
- Always approve a lab dip before bulk
- Keep record swatches for every approved color
